Best Generator Size for a Clinic or Small Hospital in Africa

What a clinic actually has to keep running

  • Lighting, fans or air conditioning, and socket circuits.
  • Vaccine fridge and medicine refrigerator, which must never be interrupted.
  • Steriliser, autoclave, small diagnostic equipment and computers.
  • Oxygen concentrator, where fitted.

Recommended sizes

  • Small clinic or health post: 5 to 9 kW covers lighting, fridge, computer and small steriliser.
  • Clinic with a vaccine cold chain and air conditioning: 12 to 15 kW.
  • Small hospital with wards and a laboratory: 18 kW and above, and consider two sets for redundancy.

Always choose silent type for a clinic

  • A clinic is usually close to patients and to neighbours, so noise matters as much as power.
  • Our silent diesel sets run at 70-75 dB(A) at 7 metres, comparable to a normal conversation at close range.

Protect the vaccine cold chain

  • Ask for a set with an automatic transfer switch so the changeover happens within seconds of an outage.
  • Install a surge protector to protect sensitive medical equipment from voltage spikes.
  • Keep a spare set of filters and injectors on site, and agree a maintenance interval with your supplier.
