Silent vs Open Type Generator: Which One Should You Buy?

Walk into any generator market in Africa and you will meet two shapes: the boxed “silent” type and the skeletal “open frame” type. They often share the same engine and the same electrical output — so which one deserves your money?

What is a silent (soundproof) generator?

A silent set has its engine and alternator mounted inside a steel canopy lined with sound-absorbing foam. Air goes through baffled ducts, so the noise drops to about 70-75 dB(A) at 7 metres — comparable to a busy street, not a construction site. The canopy also protects the machine from rain, dust and sun.

What is an open frame generator?

An open frame set is the classic tubular steel chassis with everything exposed. Air flows straight through, which helps cooling and makes every part visible and easy to service. Noise is typically 80-85 dB(A) at 7 metres — fine on a building site, intrusive in a living area.

Side-by-side comparison

Factor Silent type Open frame
Noise at 7 m 70-75 dB(A) 80-85 dB(A)
Weight (3.5 kW class) ≈130 kg ≈71 kg
Weather protection Full canopy Needs shelter
Cooling & service access Good (baffled) Excellent (direct)
Best for Homes, shops, clinics, hotels, night use Sites, mines, farms, rental fleets
Typical price Higher Lower

Same engine, same output

Take our 3.5 kW class as an example: the CN04GF silent and the CN04GF open frame use the same 178F air-cooled diesel engine and the same copper alternator, producing the same 3 kW continuous. The differences are the canopy, the weight (130 kg vs 71 kg) and the noise. There is no “weaker” version.

Which one should you buy?

  • Buy silent if the set will run near people: home backup, shops, clinics, hotels, offices, or any night-time use. Your neighbours (and your family) will thank you.
  • Buy open frame if the set works on a construction site, in a mine, on a farm, or in a rental fleet — places where noise does not matter, weight matters, and budget matters even more.
  • Servicing both is easy: air-cooled engines have no radiator to flush; daily checks are oil, fuel and air filter.

A note on fuel

Both types burn roughly the same fuel per hour at the same load, because the engine is the same. A silent canopy does not consume power — it only shapes the sound.

Our advice

If you are buying one set that must do everything, choose silent — it works day and night, rain or shine. If you are equipping a site or a rental business, mix both: open frames for the field, one silent set for the site office.
