Buying a Generator From China: What Importers Should Check

Lock the specification before the price

  • Voltage and frequency must match your market; the same model can be built as 220V/50Hz or 110V/60Hz.
  • Confirm whether the quote includes the wheel kit, ATS, tool kit and spare filters.
  • Ask for the exact model, engine model, alternator type and net weight in writing.

Packing and container planning

  • Ask for the packing size and the 20FT and 40HQ loading quantity before you calculate freight.
  • Plywood case packing is standard for LCL shipments; cartons are enough for a full container load.
  • Small sets from 3 kW to 9 kW load 99 to 284 pieces in a 40HQ, so consolidation saves a lot of freight.

Certification and documents

  • Confirm which certificates your market requires, for example CE for Europe or SONCAP for Nigeria.
  • Ask for the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin.
  • Check that the nameplate matches the datasheet you agreed.

Inspection and payment

  • For a first order, arrange a third-party inspection before shipment, or ask for a video of the test run.
  • Standard terms: 30 percent deposit with the order, balance against the bill of lading copy.
  • Agree the spare parts list and the warranty period in the contract, not only in the chat.

After-sales you should insist on

  • A spare parts list with part numbers, so you can order consumables locally if needed.
  • An English operation and maintenance manual in the shipment.
  • A named contact who answers technical questions after the goods arrive.
