Diesel Generator Maintenance Schedule: Hour-Based Checklist

Every start – 5 minutes

  • Oil level on the dipstick, fuel level, coolant or air cooling passages.
  • Look for leaks under the set and loose wiring.
  • Listen for unusual noise in the first 30 seconds of running.

Every 50 hours

  • Clean the air filter element; replace it in dusty conditions.
  • Check battery terminals and top up the electrolyte if it is a serviceable battery.
  • Clean the cooling fins, fan and canopy ventilation openings.

Every 250 hours

  • Change the engine oil and the oil filter.
  • Replace the fuel filter and drain water from the filter bowl.
  • Check and adjust the belt tension where fitted.

Every 1000 hours

  • Have the injector and injection pump checked by a workshop.
  • Check valve clearance and adjust if necessary.
  • Inspect the alternator bearings and the control panel connections.

Keep a logbook

  • Write down running hours, oil changes and any fault you noticed.
  • A logbook turns guesswork into evidence when a problem appears, and it supports warranty claims.
