Diesel Generator vs Petrol Generator for Home and Shop Backup

Running cost per hour

  • A diesel engine typically consumes 20-30 percent less fuel per kWh than a petrol engine of the same output.
  • In markets where diesel is cheaper or more available, the advantage grows further.

Engine life and durability

  • Diesel engines run at 3000 rpm with higher compression and are built for continuous duty, so the service life is much longer.
  • Petrol engines are lighter and cheaper to buy, but they are not designed for several hours of daily running.

Fuel safety and storage

  • Petrol is highly volatile and needs careful storage away from living areas.
  • Diesel has a much higher flash point, which makes it safer to store at a shop or a house.

Noise and vibration

  • Petrol generators are generally noisier and higher revving.
  • Silent type diesel sets run at only 70-75 dB(A) at 7 metres and can be placed near a house or shop.

When petrol still makes sense

  • Occasional short use, a few hours a month, and a tight budget: a small petrol set is acceptable.
  • Daily or long-hour backup: diesel is the cheaper choice over two or three years even though the purchase price is higher.
