How to Choose a Generator for a Hotel or Guest House

What guests notice first

  • Air conditioning, lights and Wi-Fi are the three things guests complain about most during an outage.
  • The generator should cover these first, then the kitchen, then the lift if the budget allows.

Load estimate by hotel size

  • Guest house with 6-10 rooms: lighting, sockets, AC and fridge: 9-12 kW.
  • Small hotel with 15-25 rooms plus a lift: 15-18 kW, or a larger set if the kitchen is electric.
  • If cooking and water heating are electric, the load jumps sharply and must be calculated separately.

Noise is a commercial decision

  • Guests will complain about noise long before they complain about power quality.
  • Always choose silent type: our sets run at 70-75 dB(A) at 7 metres.
  • Place the set away from guest rooms, and if possible behind a wall, with the exhaust facing away.

Installation essentials

  • Use an automatic transfer switch so the changeover happens without staff intervention.
  • Fit anti-vibration mounts to stop noise travelling through the building structure.
  • Keep a maintenance contract; a failed standby set during high season costs more than the service.
