How Many Hours Can a Small Diesel Generator Run Continuously

Tank capacity sets the first limit

  • Our air-cooled models carry 12.5 to 25 litres of fuel and run 11 to 15 hours at rated load.
  • That covers a normal working day or a full night of standby power.

The engine itself can run far longer

  • A small air-cooled diesel engine can run continuously for several days provided the load, cooling and oil are under control.
  • The real constraints are fuel supply and cooling airflow, not the engine design.

How to run long hours safely

  • Keep the load at or below 80 percent of rated power for continuous duty.
  • Check the oil level every 8 to 10 hours and top up if needed.
  • Keep the cooling fins and canopy vents free of dust, especially on construction sites.
  • Do not refuel while the engine is running; shut it down and let it cool for a few minutes.

For very long operation

  • For round-the-clock power, use an external fuel tank with a gravity or pump feed.
  • Plan a short stop every 24 hours for an oil level check and a visual inspection.
  • For permanent installation, ask us about a model with an automatic transfer switch so the set starts and stops by itself.
