Single Phase vs Three Phase Generator: Which One Do You Need

Look at your equipment, not the building

  • Single phase 220V is used by lights, sockets, fridges, TVs, computers and small tools.
  • Three phase 380V or 400V is used by motors above about 2.2 kW, lifts, welding machines, pumps and compressors.

Why three phase motors need three phase supply

  • A three phase motor cannot be started from a single phase supply without extra equipment.
  • If your workshop or plant runs three phase motors, you need a three phase generator.

You can have both

  • Our small diesel generator sets can be configured for 110V, 220V or 380V and can supply single phase and three phase at the same time.
  • That means one set covers lighting and sockets as well as motor loads.

Balancing the load

  • On a three phase set, try to spread single phase loads evenly across the three phases.
  • A badly unbalanced load causes voltage fluctuation and can trip the breaker even when total power is low.
  • Tell us your load list and we will advise the right phase configuration before shipment.
