What Size Generator Do I Need for a Small Workshop?
Typical loads in a small workshop
Lighting and fans: 0.5-2 kW
Hand tools and small machines: 1-3 kW
Air compressor (starting): 3-6 kW
Welding machine: 5-10 kW depending on rod diameter
A quick matching table
Lighting, fans, TV, fridge only: 3-5 kW is enough.
Hand tools plus lighting and a small pump: 6-9 kW.
Air compressor or small welding work: 10.5-15 kW.
Multiple machines running at the same time: 18 kW and above.
Why a diesel generator, not petrol
Diesel engines run at lower speed with higher torque, so they handle motor starting better.
Fuel consumption per kWh is lower and the engine life is longer, which matters if you run several hours a day.
Add up, then round up
Add all loads that will run at the same time, add 25% margin, then choose the nearest model above it.
